EFFECT OF INOCULATION WITH AZOTOBACTER AND RHIZOBIUM ON GROWTH OF HOT PEPPER (Capsicum annuum L. CV. PILAR F1)

Plant need nutrient in every process of development, such as nitrogen that cannot be used directly. The nutrient can be obtained from chemical fertilizer but using it constantly and excessively can damage the soil fertility. Therefore, this study was done to improve the plant growth using biological agents, such as Azotobacter and Rhizobium bacteria. Hot pepper (C.annuum L. cv. Pilar F1) was treated within 78 days using combination media, i.e sterilized soil, sterilized compost, and biological agents : (i) Control (C-sterilized soil + sterilized compost), (ii) sterilized soil + sterilized compost + inoculum of Azotobacter (A), and (iii) sterilized soil + sterilized compost + inoculum of Rhizobium (R). Both bacterial inoculum was made in sawdust and given in two periods, at the seed stage and at the plant age was 14 DAP (Days After Planting). Plant growth measured were plant height, number of leaves and flowers. The results showed that Azotobacter increased the plant height, number of leaves and flowers up to 20%, 22% and113%, respectively, compared to control. As for Rhizobium, it also increased the plant height, number of leaves and flowers up to19%, 13% and 63%, respectively, compared to control. Based on this result it can be concluded that Azotobacter and Rhizobium had given positive effect by increasing the growth of hot pepper (C.annuum L. cv. Pilar F1)
